Pin-up Maternity

 Sometimes I get a chance to have some real fun.  This week I worked with a woman who loves pin-up, so we decided to do her maternity photo session in a pin-up style.

Couples Maternity

 I love it when I get the chance to do a couples shoot as part of a maternity photo session.  It gives me a chance as their photographer to capture the love for the new baby.

Here we see how this feeling is captured.  This type of photo means so much to the parents and to the child when they get older.   Simple and clean with the focus just on the the parents.  No props or fancy sets needed.  Black and white I feel enhances the mood.

Looking toward the future - Maternity

B&W is one of my favorite styles as a photographer for creating maternity photographs. I like how the shadows and light play across the pregnant belly. I call this one "Looking towards the future" as she looks off to the distance thinking about how her life will be with her new baby.

I had a fun shoot this week shoot some maternity shots of Jessica. She was so excited about the baby she is having. Of course I made sure to get plenty of shots that really showed off her belly.

Jessica loved the proofs and her selections made an amazing memory book.

Maternity Photography - Play with light

I always look for a new way to photograph my maternity clients so their pregnancy photography book will have a wide variety of photographs. I want each spread in the book to create its own mood.



This time I felt like using one of the techniques I use in fashion, a strong directional light to create shadows and shapes. I really wanted the shadow on the floor showing off the shape of the future mom.

Glowing Maternity Photography

Capturing that magical look that pregnancy brings to a woman is such a rewarding type of photography. I really enjoy working with pregnant women to document this time in their lives. These photographs will become heirlooms that the family will treasure through generations.

When I shoot maternity photographs I take my experience from glamour and boudoir and apply those techniques. The softness desired in glamour photography creates very beautiful maternity images. The future moms are prefect for this type of look.

Also, I find the lighting techniques from glamour and fine art come into play. Using the light and shadows to contour and hi-light the shape of her belly takes an excellent knowledge of lighting. In my fine art work I shoot what are known as bodyscapes, and pregnancy creates some amazing opportunities for this type of photography.

Often the father and/or siblings will pose with the mom to be to show the family’s newest member in their first “portrait”. And of course there are plenty of fun maternity poses such as baby blocks on the belly and hand hearts that are always fun.

As always I am looking forward to my next maternity photo shoot. I know that it will be a joy working with the pregnant mom to be.
